A Guide to: Utrecht, Netherlands

Utrecht is a charming town in the centre of The Netherlands about an hour outside of Amsterdam. We visited for a few days on our European adventure as it was the perfect getaway from the big city. After spending time in the busy city it was nice to see how quiet and less busy city. Utrecht has everything you could imagine; a medieval city core, shopping district, wide open spaces, canals, festivals, fashionable shops and museums.

Best Time To Go

The best time to visit Utrecht are the spring months in April and May so you can watch the daffodils and tulips bloom. This also gives you perfect weather to walk around because it’s not as hot as the summer months, this is also the time of the year with the least amount of rain. In the summer there are tons of festivals, and in the fall enjoy the changing colours of the leafs over the canals.

Things to Do

Visit the Swan Market

The Swan Market is a great place to discover creative local entrepreneurs. You can find a very diverse selection of jewelry, fashion, antiques, and toys. They also have great local affordable art and interior items.

Climbing the Dom Tower

The iconic Dom Tower is one of Utrecht’s most iconic attractions. Built 2000 years ago, the Dom Tower stands at 112 meters being the highest tower in the Netherlands. The tower has been the central feature of the Utrecht as the city was built and expanded around the tower. After around 465 steps up to the top, you can enjoy a 360 view of the whole city!

Head Underground with the DOMunder Tour

If you want to learn more about the Dom Square and history of the Utrecht you can join the DOMunder tour. Grab a flashlight and head underground through ruins to explore archaeological finds and artifacts. The underground space shows you more than 2000 years of history on Utrechts founding and ties together the Dom Church and Tower.

Canal Tour

A canal cruise is an essential part of the Utrecht experience. Admire the city from down in the water where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the lovely facades. You’ll pass by some iconic landmarks like the Dom Tower, City Hall, Park Lepelenburg, Utrecht Theater, and many more.

Where to Stay

Utrecht has a wide variety of hotels, hostels, and apartments style rentals. If you are looking for an upscale stay while in Utrecht check out the beautiful Grant Hotel Karel V. Utrecht also has a huge selection of mid and budget-friendly options with many affordable options. Our personal favourite hostel- Strowis is one that we highly recommend as we met a lot of other travellers there and got to connect and share experiences.

Where to Eat

Utrecht has a great variety of places to eat from small breakfast cafes to lovely restaurants for dinner. One popular cafe to get a morning espresso or an afternoon treat is Wijncafe Lefebvre. Kafe Belgie is another great stop for drinks as they are known for having 200+ international beers.

If you are looking for a place to have a quiet dinner this city has many options. Poke Perfect is new to Utrecht and already a favourite by many. They serve Hawaiian inspired dishes consisting of sushi rice, fish, and vegetables served in bowls. Or you can try Stan & Co where you take a seat at the kitchen table and watch the cook prepare the dishes before your eyes. Another amazing experience is Roost, this restaurant is the perfect place to grab something to eat and enjoy the weather out on the sunny terrace.

Utrecht being one of the happiest places in the world (according to BBC Travel) was definitely one of our favorite stops this summer. It was an amazing city to visit. I would love to comeback here again and explore! Possibly in Autumn next time?

Thank-you to Visit Utrecht for welcoming me to explore their beautiful city! I loved my time in here – all opinions and photos are my own.
