A Week in the 1000 Islands

Looking for relaxation but also adventure? Thousand Islands, Ontario is a popular destination for travellers looking to unwind or venture out. Located along the USA and Canadian border, the 1000 Islands is simply a travelers paradise. So much history surrounds these charming lakes it’s no wonder its a hit time and time again.

You could spend any time between 1 day to 1 month in the 1000 Islands and still have lots left to do and see. The average time span spent here is usually a 2-weekend getaway or a week-long vacation mostly for families and couples who want to relax but have fun. No matter how long or short your stay is your bound to enjoy you and see a few neat things.

The 1000 Islands isn’t just cottage country, it’s much more! If you’re lucky enough to stay at a cottage you can experience the wildlife and nature all at your front door. If you’re staying at a hotel, campsite or resort you are guaranteed something to do as the lakefront is always near. Boating is a popular pastime in the region along with other water sports such as jet skiing or canoeing. You can easily travel from one island to the next since they are so accessible and close together. With over 1800 islands you are more than likely to travel to a few during your stay.

Boldt Castle

One of the many treasures of the 1000 Islands, Boldt Castle located on Heart Island is a historic and timeless destination. Initially, the castle was built by George Boldt for his wife in 1900 as a gift, but after her death, the restoration of the island was granted years later by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority. Today you can take a ferry or boat to the island where you can explore the grounds and tour the castle. Its history and architecture make it a masterpiece itself attracting travelers of all kind to come and visit.

1000 Islands Tower

What better way can you enjoy the 1000 Islands than from thousands of meters up! This tourist attraction has some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the St. Lawrence River. Located in Lansdowne, ON the tower is visible for kilometers so you can’t miss it.

Scenic Boat Cruise

To cruise these islands is a must. You can take one of many guided boat tours which will take you past hundreds of islands, dozens of cottages, and an endless galore of lighthouses and castles. You can find an adventurous cruise anywhere from one to five hours long departing from many popular towns such as Gananoque, ON, or Alexandria Bay, NY.

Thousand Islands State Parks Region

If you’re looking for some real peace and quiet try a state park where you can totally go off the grid and relax. Consisting of 30 state parks full of campsites, picnic areas, beaches, marinas, golf courses and much more. Many favourites include Wellesley Island State Park and Keewaydin State Park.

Relax with a day at the Spa

Chances are after all the exploration and fun you want to just sit down and relax. There’s no better way to treat yourself then to Day Spa where a massage and facial is waiting for you. On top of the already tranquil 1000 Islands, you can find heavenly inspired spas with fantastic services and kind staff. I recommend trying Gananoque Inn & Spa or Colonial Resort and Spa.

The 1000 Islands has over 30 golf courses to keep you busy all day long. With the intense but beautiful scenery in this region, you are bound to get sucked into the many manicured elegant courses. From mini putting to championship ranges to nine-hole courses, there’s something for everyone here. Try Iroquois Golf Club or Wolfe Island Riverfront Golf Course.
